The University was established under the Deakin University Act, 1974. The university is named after Alfred Deakin, who was Australia's second prime minister and an advocate for the establishment of Federation; Deakin University resulted from merging several existing colleges including the Gordon Institute of Technology (higher education) and the State College of Victoria - Geelong. The university was also established as the first provider of distance education (including support for older, rural, and historically disadvantaged populations) in Australia – which represented an important change in the way higher education was provided within the country.
