The Claremont Teachers College established in 1902 marks the beginning of ECU which became a university only after recent years in 1991. The Western Australian College of Advanced Education (WACAE) was created in 1981 through the unification of multiple teacher training colleges which had been established throughout the 20th century. The institution received its official name Edith Cowan University in 1991 to honor the memory of Edith Dircksey Cowan who had served as the university's first president.
