Sacro Cuore Catholic University, which people call "Cattolica," operates as a private research university that ranks as the biggest Catholic educational institution throughout the globe. The institution runs its main operations from Milan while maintaining a national educational system that connects its various sites which include Brescia, Piacenza, Cremona, and Rome. The university provides top-quality services through its five-star rating which enables students to find employment and access its outstanding facilities while it functions as a key cultural and educational link between Italy and Europe. The main Milan campus presents a beautiful architectural design which creates a learning space that unites historic city elements with contemporary academic facilities.
The institution opened its doors on December 7 1921 when Father Agostino Gemelli and other Catholic scholars established a university to promote advancement in national Italian culture. The university established its main educational facility at the historical Cistercian Monastery of Sant'Ambrogio which features a building designed by Bramante in 1932. The university campus suffered extensive destruction during the 1943 World War II bombings but Father Gemelli successfully restored the campus within a short period of time. The Italian educational system expanded to include new locations during the next thirty years which started with the establishment of the Piacenza campus in 1952 and continued with the opening of the Rome campus in 1961 which Pope John XXIII attended for the official inauguration.
