Auckland University of Technology is a modern, innovative public research university located in the city of Auckland in New Zealand. As a progressive institution, AUT prides itself on having a dynamic and innovative approach to providing higher education, encouraging students to develop a culture of inquiry and critical thinking. With three specialist campus sites including City, North, and South, AUT provides an opportunity for its diverse student body to be supported by a multicultural, innovative environment, which reflects the unique diversity of New Zealand’s largest city (Auckland). AUT is ranked in the top 1% of universities around the world based on its global perspective and support for the development of a community in which members are encouraged to challenge the conventional wisdom around them.
AUT became an official university on Jan 1, 2000 and has a long history as a place of education since 1895 when Auckland Technical School was established. Throughout the course of the 20th century, AUT transformed into many different organizations; it was once known as Seddon Memorial Technical College and then known as Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT). The evolution of the institution from a technical school into a comprehensive university illustrates the ongoing commitment of the university to provide practical and applied knowledge. The decision to become a university at the start of the year 2000 represented a major historical milestone for the institution, enabling it to grow from its past and provide further educational opportunities for its communities.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Auckland University of Technology is positioned as the #410 top university in the world, which makes it the #8 top university in New Zealand. The university's global rank is improved by 2 points from last year.
