AUT became an official university on Jan 1, 2000 and has a long history as a place of education since 1895 when Auckland Technical School was established. Throughout the course of the 20th century, AUT transformed into many different organizations; it was once known as Seddon Memorial Technical College and then known as Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT). The evolution of the institution from a technical school into a comprehensive university illustrates the ongoing commitment of the university to provide practical and applied knowledge.
