Northumbria University exists as a research-oriented public university located in Newcastle upon Tyne between the English city of Newcastle and its neighboring Tyne River. The university operates its main urban campus which serves as a vital educational hub for North East England and its multiple academic programs. The university has built strong partnerships with various industries while it provides social mobility programs and academic innovations, which result in better job opportunities for its students. The institution functions through different main faculties which manage its broad academic programs and research efforts while it upholds an outstanding reputation that combines traditional academic standards with contemporary international approaches.
The university began its existence through the combination of three regional colleges which included Rutherford College of Technology and College of Art & Industrial Design and Municipal College of Commerce, which became Newcastle Polytechnic after their merger in 1969. The United Kingdom created this merger as part of a national initiative that aimed to enhance technical and vocational education throughout the country. The institution reached its first milestone in September 1992 when it became a university under the Further and Higher Education Act, which resulted in the official name change to Northumbria University. The university has expanded its campus space and research operations through the establishment of health specialized colleges and international campuses, enabling it to create a worldwide academic network.
