Queen Mary University of London functions as a research-intensive public university which operates as a member of the Russell Group from its location in the active East End area of London. The institution operates as a global university which maintains five campuses throughout London together with its worldwide operations in nations like China and Malta and Singapore. The university receives frequent recognition because it promotes social justice and inclusive practices while maintaining its status as one of the most socially diverse research universities in the United Kingdom. The Mile End campus stands as the biggest self-contained residential campus in London which creates an independent community space that exists within the vibrant atmosphere of a global city.
The university's development path shows how four different educational institutions combined their resources during multiple centuries to establish the present-day educational institution. The institution traces its origins to the establishment of St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College in 1785 which marks the beginning of England's first official medical school and the London Hospital Medical College which started in 1740. The establishment of the People's Palace in 1887 served as a local educational and cultural center for East London residents which later developed into Queen Mary College. Queen Mary College merged with Westfield College in 1989 to create Queen Mary and Westfield College. The institution reached its current form in 1995 through the final merger with the medical colleges which established its complete status as an educational institution.
