Located on the coast of Swansea, Wales, Swansea University is a public research university. The university has two beautiful campuses right on the beach, the historic Singleton Park Campus located in established botanic gardens, and the modern, £450 million Bay Campus opened in 2015. Swansea University has a reputation for having a "warm Welsh" environment, as well as an emphasis on student experience. Swansea University ranks highly among other UK institutions for student satisfaction and employability. The university is situated between the city centre of Swansea (a vibrant city) and the Gower Peninsula (the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK), making it a great place for students to study and play outdoors.
Swansea University was originally formed in 1920 as University College of Swansea following a report from the Royal Commission that concluded there was demand for higher education to support South Wales' industrial base. The Foundation Stone was laid by King George V and the University opened with only 89 students. Swansea University played an instrumental role in the development of South Wales through the 20th century, primarily due to its focus on metallurgy and engineering early on in its life. After almost 70 years of growth and a name change to University of Wales Swansea in 1996, Swansea University became a fully independent university.
